DESCRIPTION: This is an original Novice costume. Much of the metallic thread has come off of the veins. Ruth had been a dancer in the company and had shown an artistic flare so Balanchine asked her to try to help Jerry with his costumes. When the ballet was filmed for TV the censores asked NYCB to make unitard versions so that so much "dancer flesh" wouldn't show. All prints are flush mounted on a substrate of styrene board known for its smooth surface and archival qualities.
