Milkweed and Velvet Jacket
The center image is of a double-sided lamp. The shade is like a scroll. I’ve had the lamp for a long time and have not put a wire in it so that it will light. I think that I really love it as a shape, and to add a cord might somehow ruin the appeal of the form. The frame around the lamp is the inside of a young boy’s jacket. The jacket looks to be about a hundred years old and is made of silk, linen, and cut velvet.
The backdrop is pods of milkweed that I picked in the woods in the autumn. The pods were at different stages of openness, but as I photographed them in my studio, I think the dryness of indoors made them all pop open. I had little feathers, each attached to a brown seed, floating around my studio for weeks. The structure of the seeds and their feather-like parachutes and the way that they all fit into the pod is amazing.
