Karinska Violin

Fanfare Scenery and Costumes by Irene Sharaff

Costumes by Madame Barbara Karinska

Choreographed by Jerome Robbins

Music by Benjamin Britten

This  ballet is considered a visualization of The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, with the dancers representing instruments and dancing short illustrative variations. The ballet is comprised of 34 dancers as the four families of the Symphony Orchestra and one narrator.

Red costumes represent the string instruments, blue for woodwinds, yellow for brass, black for percussion, and white for harp. At the end of the ballet, there is a big finale with all the dancers moving in unison to the music of Purcell. These costumes were originally for New York City Ballet and then were used in March of 1977 for Boston Ballet.
