Blue Stripe Courtly Coat

This incredible frock coat in many ways exemplifies the collection at the Royal Swedish Ballet. The entire garment oozes aristocratic, possibly even royal beginnings.

As one of the oldest collections in Europe, it is home to many pieces that began as clothing for individuals at court. The first clue to its original iteration is the intention of the design it self. From the blue striped silk taffeta to the lavish finely embroidered surfaces, this garment is meant to be seen and admired up close. Each button transcends its use and becomes another visual punctuation on a coat that already speaks volumes to its wearer. The buttons introduce a wonderful graphic in the repeated circle that enlivens the whole thing. If you try to picture the coat without the buttons and their visually delightful addition, the coat, while stunning becomes a much flatter experience.

There is nothing about this piece that was made for the stage. Nothing meant to be seen at a distance of audience and players.
